Most Improved Student In Victoria School!

I was doing poorly for many of my subjects, including English which I barely passed. The main reason for this was because I struggled to understand the questions in the various subjects due to my poor English. Since joining Mr Ong’s class however, my English language skills have improved. I managed to score better not only for English but also for all my other subjects too at the O Level exam. As a result of this, I won the Most Improved Student Award for Victoria School in 2018, and successfully qualified to enter Victoria Junior College in 2019.

Amos Ng
O-Level Candidate, Victoria Secondary School

Improved from D7 to A1!

I was worried that I would fail my O Level exam as I had scored a D7 for my SA2 exam in Sec 3. Thankfully, my brother recommended me to join Teacher Daniel’s class. Since then, I have experienced rapid improvement across all areas of English but especially so in Composition and Comprehension. Due to this, I was able to improve my English grades from a D7 to an A1 by the time I took my O-level exam, and qualified for the polytechnic course of my choice. Thank you Teacher Daniel!

Sofia Irwan
O-Level Candidate, CHIJ Katong Convent

Improved from D7 to A2!

I had always struggled in English even though I came from an English speaking household. Things finally came to a head when I scored a D7 for my SA2 during S3. My mother decided to sign me up for lessons with Mr Ong, and in under a year, I experienced massive improvement. When I received my O-level results, I could hardly believe my eyes as I had achieved an A for English for the first time in my secondary school life. This was the best possible time to score an A, as it significantly improved my L1R4 for entry into the polytechnic course of my choice.

Crystal Goh
O-Level Candidate, Bedok South Secondary School

Improved from C6 to A2!

My parents and I were in panic mode when I received my SA1 results in Sec 4 as I scored only a C6 for English. We needed help urgently and thankfully, my parents signed me up for classes with Teacher Daniel in time. Despite the short time frame of only 4 months, I managed to experience rapid improvement across all areas of English. Due to this, I was able to miraculously see my English grades improve from a C6 to an A2 by the time I took my O-level exam. This has enabled me to qualify for the polytechnic course of my choice. Thank you Teacher Daniel for your help!

Yong Ying Jing
O-Level Candidate, Zhonghua Secondary School

Improved from B4 to A1!

I struggled with many of my subjects in school as my English was not strong. I thus did not understand many of my subjects. However, with Mr Ong’s help this all changed. The techniques he taught me for English were applicable even for other subjects too. This help me to improve all my subject grades. As a result of this, I emerged as the Top N(A)-level student in Singapore in 2018 with a perfect EMB3 score of 5 points. My English results also improved from a B4 to an A1!

Our Other Secondary Students Have Likewise Done Exceedingly Well In Their Exams!

Scored A For The First Time!

I was told that the secondary school syllabus would be much more challenging than what I faced in primary school. However, I was able to transit comfortably with Teacher Daniel’s help. His dedicated guidance and pep talks motivated me to do my best in my work. This definitely contributed towards me achieving A for English for the first time be it in secondary or primary school

Viresh Kumar
S1 Student, St Patrick’s School

Improved from C5 to A2!

My essay writing was horrendous. I could barely even put together a basic PEEL paragraph. I asked my friend who did well for his English to recommend me his tutor and I then signed up for lessons with Teacher Daniel. In the space of less than a year, my English grade improved from a C to an A and this was largely due to the improvements I made in my essay and situational writing.

Dylan Lim
S3 Student, St Hildas Secondary School

Improved from C6 to A2!

I used to struggle very much in English. In fact, I even scored a C6 for it in Sec 2.  I am thus very glad that my mother signed me up for lessons with Mr Ong through my brother’s recommendation. Within a year, I managed to improve by over 20%, and even achieved an A2 for my S3 SA2. This was amazing as I achieved this despite all the disruptions to classes due to the circuit breaker earlier in the year.

Lucas Tan
S3 Student, Junyuan Secondary School

Scored 3rd Highest In Class!

English comprehension was an area I really struggled in when I first entered secondary school. This was so even though I came from an English speaking household. I am thus grateful for Teacher Daniel’s guidance in this area. This year I managed to score an A for the first time for my paper 2. As a result of this, I managed to achieve the third highest score in my class for English!

Sewell Mak
S3 Student, Anglican High School

Improved from C5 to A2!

I was doing poorly for English when I first started out lessons with Teacher Daniel. The main reason for this was because I struggled to understand the questions in the Comprehension. Since joining Teacher Daniel’s class however, my English language skills have improved. As a result, I managed to score much better grades for English and even secured an A2 for it at the N Level exam. This has contributed significantly to me emerging as the top NA student for 2019 in my school, and more importantly enabled me to qualify for the Poly Foundation Programme in 2020.

University Scholar

Teacher Daniel taught me from Pri 4 until Sec 4. Over the years in his class, I really appreciated how the application focused teaching methods taught by him enabled me to not only strengthen my language skills, but more importantly helped me to hone my critical thinking ability and communication skills. The skills I’ve learnt from him stayed with me even after I graduated from Secondary school, and were crucial for my successful scholarship application.

Teacher Daniel is someone who teaches English in a way that can be applied meaningfully beyond the classroom. The skills he taught me over the years helped me to present myself confidently in front of various audiences, and played a significant role in my success today as an entrepreneur.

I first met Teacher Daniel when I was a P5 student at Tao Nan School. Even at that age, I could see that the way in which he approached learning was very different from others. He focused on purposeful learning, and would always explain the rationale for anything he taught. His patience was also something I appreciated as I was an inquisitive child who asked many questions in class.

Dear Parents,

It’s that time of the year again.

You have just received your child’s result for the SA2 English paper. And let me guess…the result wasn’t ideal, right?

That’s why you’re reading this, and seeking a solution!

You might be wondering “After spending so much money on tuition, and despite working hard, why did my child still underperform and scored lower than a B3?“.

This is because of a lethal combination of 2 factors:

An Increasingly Difficult Curriculum + Wrong/Outdated Study Methods

Before starting Do Applied Learning, I was part of a core team in MOE that studied the education system.

Here’s a little “insider secret”, in case you haven’t noticed: the secondary school English curriculum will only get harder and harder year after year.

This is due to fierce competition to get into increasingly limited JC spaces, which necessitates a tougher paper even if your child prefers other options such as the Polytechnics.

The bar will be continuously raised to weed out the weaker students. Truly a survival of the fittest.

Sounds a little extreme. Cruel, even. But it’s true, and it’s happening before your eyes!

What’s worse is that many teachers (even those who charge sky-high tuition fees) have failed to adapt their teaching methods to fit the more challenging curriculum.

Due to this, your child is paying the price and suffering from poor English grades.

Before I reveal your solution to this common but deadly problem, here’s a checklist so you can understand what went wrong:

Grade Killer #1: Comprehension Woes

Year after year, I tell my students the same thing: Score well for comprehension, and half the battle is won.

Easier said than done!

For many secondary school students, the comprehension section is the bane of their existence.

I’m not exaggerating (I wish I was).

Before enrolling in our programme, many of our students scored very poorly for this section, which pulled down their grades massively.

Thankfully, we have a 4-Step Answering Scheme specially designed to tackle this grade killer.

It lists down specific steps on the correct way to analyse a comprehension passage, and how to find the right words to fill in the blanks.

Most of our students managed to improve by at least 2-3 grades for comprehension after applying this simple but effective answering scheme.

Grade Killer #2: Oral Exam Blues

When preparing for exams, many teachers don’t really focus too much on the oral aspect, even though it comprises 20% of your child’s score.

To be honest, oral is hard to teach. There’s no framework, system or formula that can solve this oral conundrum.

To score well for oral, your child needs “soft skills” like inferential ability, logical thinking and confidence.

This is not the most simple of skills to cultivate, which is why many teachers take the “easy way out” and cover it sporadically, or sometimes not at all.

We don’t believe in this haphazard approach.

Instead, we have devised an effective approach to ace-ing oral exams, even for students who are not naturally eloquent.

As a result, many of our students are able to excel in this grade-killing section.

Grade Killer #3: Examination Misery

Most students fear, or even hate, exams. They feel Stressed out. Burned out. Tired out.

As a result, even well-prepared students can succumb to underperformance due to examination misery.

Not our students though.

After going through Do Applied Learning’s programme, our students approach exams with confidence, vigor and enthusiasm.

Sounds hard to believe, but it’s true!

This is because we put our students through intense exam preparations (especially those taking crucial exams like O Levels). This is an essential mental strengthening exercise overlooked by most.

Just so you know, we don’t just do generic mock exams. Instead, we delve deep into each student’s character, and customize our teaching techniques to fit their learning patterns.

This ensures 100% readiness and confidence to perform at peak ability, even in the face of overwhelming exam stress.
